I'm sure the performance hit of downloading all those background graphics outweighs the deficit from using the CSS gradients.

@Andih: You want to limit hard disk access by setting a fixed size Virtual Memory partition in Windows; you also want to set Fusion to not dynamically add hard disk space accordingly. Set it to reserve it from the off. 2gb should be enough for a test VM. I do get some minor problems with multiple VMs; I'll post a more detailed article about high performance tweaks towards the end of the month.

I've been doing something similar for a while on a Core 7 iMac. with 8GB using Fusion. Its fine for one VM but Oliver said you sometimes use 3 ? When I try that performance (especially in OS X) tails of hugely - much worse than running the same machines on a lower spec windows box.

How have you gotten on with multiple machines - any tricks or settings ?

I've been playing around with this myself and I totally agree with your comments. I find it frustrating to say the least that JS is more widely used render a page like more modern browsers rather than using it for behavioural purposes. On a note I find webkits implementation rather long and quite unfriendly to read and IE's implementation, well i'm not sure how much impact this would have if there were a lot of buttons on a page with gradients. I'm sure there would be a performance hit on this.

Looks like some computers are running XP, and others OSX. Are you using Synergy, or hiding the other mouse / keyboard? :)
